Whispertags are problematic both because of the alphabetization thing and because they’ll end up out of context in your tags list so, use at your own risk
the tags are ordered alphabetically? i kinda just assumed they ordered them randomly to discourage whisper tags. alphabetically makes a lot more sense tho lol
Hah, you're not wrong about that. I've really enjoyed reading your ruminations on social media design on Tumblr - is that something you intend to also do here, or is this more of a dive into DW as a fandom space, and/or something else entirely?
Glad you enjoy them! Hope I get to procrastinate more write more meta on social spaces soon.
I'm mostly here because I missed on the LJ/DW fandom era (different country, different popular mid-00s socials), and I want to experience the good, the bad, and the improvable of DW as a social platform myself. We have lost a lot of "tooling" as we moved to new spaces, and, while some of it is indeed obsolete at this point, some of it was simply forgotten because our needs shifted, or because it didn't fit in the paradigm of those new platforms (or in the priorities of their creators).
So, yeah, at this point in time the needs of online social spaces have *clearly* shifted again, and it just makes sense to go back and learn from older platforms. Indeed, I find that DW often offers possible solutions to design challenges I encounter, and I'm pretty excited to see for myself how things work here, rather than keep asking others to explain it to me.
I'm going to try and do some ranting on this journal to test it out. I also have to figure out how to get more engaged with the community. Is there a "old people yell at socials" space?
(Oh, right! Being here also means I get to learn from/ask questions to different types of fans than just those on Tumblr/Twitter. Even if what I'm building might appeal to a different type of person than DW's most hardcore users, there's a lot to learn from people who love to use different platforms.)
I still consider myself mostly a neophyte here, despite having been around for a handful of years, but there are quite a few seasonal "friending" events that are actually pretty great for making new connections. Have a look at snowflake challenge and sunshine challenge. I can also rec a few specific fandom spaces, but, uh, not many. And it's probably not relevant unless you're into gay cannibals or dumb-ass Blizzard FPS characters.
I was recc'd snowflake challenge, and will look into sunshine too. Trying to force myself to do work rather than replying to comments today. I have to say, quick impression of DW is that convo can easily get longer and more personal because of how the commenting is structured. I don't know that we could have this type of interaction on tumblr.
And IDK that my fandoms are even on here. I was into the gay cannibals, but it's one of those I mostly reblogged stuff from from time to time. Which, actually, might be worth exploring as a "I wonder how it feels to follow that type of community here if you aren't super involved in it".
Maybe I should do a "social spaces nerds" community myself to test the existing community management tools too.
